Where She Slept – Fez, Morocco

It’s been hard for me to relax in Morocco. It’s exhausting being here and I feel constantly on-edge. But my hostel in Fez got me pretty close. It was in a Riad in the Medina which looked simple from the outside, but when I stepped in, I found myself in an oasis with relaxing music playing, incense burning, and mint tea being sipped. Riads are old Moroccan houses or palaces built around a courtyard, typically filled with a fountain and plants. Rooms are tucked away in the walls, which are covered in ornate carvings and mosaics. My room was on the ground floor, but after trekking up 5 flights of stairs I could wind up on a sunny rooftop terrace, high above the bustle of the Medina below.

Staying in a Riad was on my to-do list for Morocco and I’m so pleased I was able to make it. Bonus: the owner of the hostel had a puppy who ran around the courtyard all day.
