Where She Slept – Bled, Slovenia

With a heavy heart, I packed my things and left Bled, where I have spend the past three nights. This hostel was great, and my room even had a view of Bled Castle.

I’ve gotten pretty good at whipping up pasta with minimal ingredients. Many hostels provide some basic spices and olive oil and all you have to do is bring the noodles. If you’re lucky, they also have a cupboard usually where guests can leave behind food that they didn’t eat. My favorite so far was the bowl with oregano I made in Budapest. I like cooking at hostels because, not only is it cheap, it’s a great way to meet people.

I met this one guy from California who, like most everyone I meet when I say I’m from the US, started talking to me about the election. He said he wasn’t even registered to vote because it wasn’t worth it because his status as a white male made it so the election wouldn’t affect his life. Every so often I run into these uncomfortable conversations in hostels, where I don’t want to be rude, but would really like to tell someone that they are an absolute idiot. I try to dance around the subject and say in a nice way that I disagree and then I get out of the situation as quickly as possible.

So a general PSA: don’t bring up politics in a hostel. It very rarely ends up being a good conversation and only leads to discomfort.
Second PSA: VOTE! I stressed a lot and spent like $15 on postage to ensure that my voice would be heard. No excuses.
