A Night to Myself – Budapest from the Danube

Budget travel means giving up a lot of things, like maybe a few extra changes of clothes or a proper meal. You’re not staying in the finest of places, maybe you haven’t showered in 4 days, but that is why it is so important to treat yourself every once in a while. This is of course more difficult in expensive countries like Iceland, but when you’re in Hungary, you can feel a lot less guilty about it because it’s so cheap.

So that’s what I decided to do one night, treat myself to an evening on the Danube.

I had this cruise suggested to me by a blog, so I decided to take advantage of a cheap price and a beautiful city.

I paid 15 euros for the ride, which included 2 drinks and live music. I was greeted by a glass of champagne as I stepped on board and found my way to a seat. The city looked great at night, illuminated in orange/yellow lights. As I settled in, the band (two violins and a bass) began playing a mix of traditional Hungarian gypsy music and renditions of other famous songs, of course including the famous Blue Danube Waltz.

The night sailed on, and while it certainly wasn’t the most glamorous of boat rides, I had a great time feeling a little dressed up, with a glass of champagne and some incredible views all to myself. Of course there were loads of other tourists on the boat, but that didn’t matter.

It was just a two hour ride, and I was ready to head out once we were done. My night of glamour was coming to a close and I was tired from a day on my feet.

But I am so happy that I went out on a limb and booked myself a nice night out. There is something really wonderful about being a woman out by herself on a boat sailing along the Danube. I highly recommend it.
